                              Cycling An Aquarium

What does the term cycling mean when you are referring to your fish Aquarium? Cycling is a process of creating an environment that will sustain and support life in your aquarium with minimal stress to the live stock and to your state of mind.

Terms used here are relevant to the nitrogen cycle and how it affects life in the aquarium. First we must identify all components that make up the nitrogen cycle.

Ammonia (NH3) , All decaying matter, like left over fish food ,feces, urine produce ammonia, detectable amounts of .25ppm and above are troublesome for your fish and live stock above .30ppm for a short period of time can permanently damage the fish in your tank. Depending on the length and amount of exposure your fishes gills and breathing will be affected and possibly die.

Second is the bacteria that break down the Ammonia produce Nitrite (NO2) Nitrite blocks the bloods ability to absorb oxygen even if your fish can breath in detectable levels of (NO2)
they will not be able to utilize the oxygen they take in efficiently, fish can become panic stricken or loose control of their movements, even at lower levels (NO2) causes damage your fish will become stressed and their immune systems will deplete creating an opportunity for a immune system attack

Third and lastly is a second bacteria that feeds on Nitrite and forms Nitrate (NO3) , Your fish can tolerate low levels of Nitrate for short periods of time at higher levels are trouble long term NO3 can be removed by performing  regular water changes and adding live plants to the Aquarium.

Cycle never is complete it is a balance of establishing an on going evolution  keeping all water parameters in line to achieve a balanced aquarium we strive for a
(0) Ammonia, (0) Nitrite and  22 ppm Nitrate or less .

A Great Way to Cycle your New Tank is to use filter media ,gravel, seeded sponge filters from another tank that is parasite and disease free. Careful what you place into your tank .

We sell seeded sponge filters that contain live bacteria to learn how to get some and how much the cost is send us a note with size of tank in gallon here at  Pops Place
